Quick example

Calculate a 20% tip on $85.50 and split it three ways

Multiply $85.50 by 20% to get a $17.10 tip. Add the tip to get a $102.60 total, then divide by three. Each person pays $34.20.

The formulas

How the tip and split are calculated

Tip amount

Multiply the bill by the percentage divided by 100: bill × (tip ÷ 100).

Total bill

Add the calculated tip to the original bill: bill + tip.

Total per person

Divide the final total by the number of people. Penny remainders are shown as two share amounts that add back to the exact total.

Effective tip

After any round-up, divide the final tip by the original bill. This reveals the tip rate actually paid.

Optional round-up

Round the total or each person's share

“Round total” moves the bill and tip combined to the next whole dollar before splitting it. “Round each share” moves every person's amount to the next whole dollar and recomputes the final total. Both choices add the round-up difference to the tip, so the effective percentage can be higher than the rate entered.

Tipping customs vary

Preset rates are shortcuts, not recommendations

Appropriate tipping practices depend on location, service, local wages, included service charges, and personal circumstances. Check the bill for an included gratuity or service fee. The preset buttons only make common calculations faster; use the custom field for any rate that fits the situation.

Common questions

Tip calculator FAQ

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. A 20% tip on $85.50 is $17.10.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. If pennies do not divide evenly, the calculator shows how many people pay one cent more.

Does rounding up change the tip percentage?

Yes. The round-up difference becomes additional tip, so the effective rate can be higher than the percentage entered.

What tip percentage should I use?

Tipping customs vary by location and circumstance. Presets are calculation shortcuts rather than recommendations, and you can enter any nonnegative custom rate.
